The Walk for Hope is a reminder of the things that matter most in life. The purpose of the entire event is to spread more love in the world. Applications are now available for K-12 private school scholarships this fall for children from families with limited incomes. The program, known as Step Up For Students, provides annual scholarships worth up to $3,950 that can be used at more than 1,000 private schools across Florida. To qualify, new applicants must meet the household income guidelines for the federal school lunch program. For a family of four, that income limit for the 2009-2010 school year is $40,793. Students must also be entering either kindergarten or first grade or have attended a public school this year. Applications are available online at http://www.stepupforstudents.org or at the toll-free number, 1-866-406-6923. The program is limited statewide to $118-million, and the scholarships are available on first-approved, first-awarded basis. Step Up, also known as the Corporate Tax Credit Scholarship, was created in 2001 by the Florida Legislature to provide education options for economically disadvantaged children. The scholarships are financed by corporations that receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for contributions up to 75 percent of their state income tax liability. This year, the program serves 23,400 students.
